Getting Around

Dumfries & Stewartry Sub-Branch covers an area of approximately 1780 square miles in South West Scotland. This area is largely rural with one main urban area, Dumfries, plus smaller towns, villages and scattered settlements. Traveling by public transport in this area can be easy or challenging depending on your destination and/or route. The good news is that you can get to most of the real ale pubs in our area by bus or train.

Bus Services

Dumfries & Galloway Council provides downloadable bus timetables on their website along with a list of service operators and their contact details. Information on bus services during public holidays is also available.

http://www.dumgal.gov.uk/timetables

One bus operator, Stagecoach, has an app to aid journey planning that also includes live bus information for their services. Further information can be found on their website.

https://www.stagecoachbus.com/about/west-scotland/dumfries

Ticket options include single, return and day tickets. Bus drivers will be able to advise on the best ticket for your planned journey and any potential restrictions on their use e.g. some tickets may not be accepted by all bus companies.

SWESTRANS, the Regional Transport Partnership, has a useful page on their website about service information. The link to bus timetables directs users to the Dumfries & Galloway Council website. The Sustainable Travel section has a link to download a very useful map of bus and cycle routes across Dumfries & Galloway that also includes a separate map of Dumfries. There is also a map of Stranraer town, an area covered by neighbouring CAMRA branch Ayrshire & Wigtownshire.

Train

Gretna Green, Annan, Dumfries, Sanquhar and Kirkconnel are on the Carlisle to Glasgow line via Kilmarnock. This service is operated by ScotRail. Lockerbie is on the West Coast Main Line and there are trains to Carlisle, Edinburgh and Glasgow. Train operators that currently stop in Lockerbie are Avanti and TransPennine Express.

Information on train services can be found on the National Rail website.

https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/

We have a more detailed download that covers services in detail but is not kept up to date due to the administration required and because all of the information is available from the live websites above. However, you may like to review it, particularly for bus service numbers.
